In the eye of the storm
In winter, the pier protects not only the boats and buildings in the harbour but also the huge amount of fishermen’s equipment piled high and tied down against the winter storms.

Lines and surf
You see so many different shapes as you walk along Smeaton's Pier in winter. Lobster pots, coils of fishing nets and so much more of the fishermen's gear. All of it is huddled safely between the two lighthouses.

Safely anchored
The wall of Smeaton's Pier provides a safe haven from the winter storms. Here, the fishermen store their huge stacks of fishing gear and lobster pots safely fastened to the wall until spring arrives.
